Mental health seminar series to launch at London Campus

The London Seminar Series is an opportunity to showcase Liverpool’s expertise in London

The University of Liverpool’s Institute of Psychology, Health and Society will launch a series of seminars to showcase the latest research from its experts.

Professor Peter Kinderman, Head of the Institute of Psychology, Health and Society will open the series at the University’s campus in London with the seminar `Psychology and mental health: Beyond nature and nurture’ which will offer a new perspective on the ‘nature vs nurture’ debate.

 

It will help explain the ways in which we are affected by life experiences and illustrate ways to improve our own mental health and well-being.

Dr Ben Ambridge, Senior Lecturer and author of Psy-Q, a book that explores human psychology, will host an evening presenting some interactive psychological tests from a wealth of scientific literature on the subject and show how to use these studies to better understand ourselves.

Award-winning University postdoctoral researcher, Dr Eleanor Longden, will tell the moving tale of how she overcame her diagnosis of schizophrenia to earn a master’s in psychology and makes the case that it was through learning to listen to her ‘voices’ that she was able to survive.

The series will also feature Dr Sarah Butchard discussing how to protect the human rghts of people with dementia and will include two seminars explaining the recent implications of a groundbreaking report from the British Psychological Society into `Understanding psychosis and schizophrenia: Why people sometimes hear voices, believe things that others find strange, or sppear out of touch with reality and what can help’.
