Professor Susan Dawson, Head of the University’s School of Veterinary Science with RUMA Secretary General, John Fitzgerald on European Antibiotic Awareness Day
As part of European Antibiotic Awareness Day (18 November), the University of Liverpool’s School of Veterinary Science held an event to highlight the responsible use of these drugs in animals.
The meeting – ‘Promoting Good Veterinary Antimicrobial Stewardship’ – brought together different sectors of the profession to discuss best practice, and guidelines to promote good antimicrobial stewardship within veterinary medicine and food animal production.
There was also a panel discussion chaired by Professor Peter Borriello from the Veterinary Medicines Directorate of DEFRA and Professor Susan Dawson, Head of the University’s School of Veterinary Science. Research posters were displayed to showcase work in the area of prescribing practice, and initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship.
Secretary General of the Responsible Uses of Medicine in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA), John Fitzgerald was one of the speakers on the day. He said: “I was delighted to speak at this meeting on EU Antibiotic Awareness Day.
“Antibiotics are key medicines in both human and animal health and it is important that all who use them do so responsibly so that people and animals can continue to benefit. Good stewardship is part of this responsible use and it is that which RUMA promotes through its guidelines.”
