Dr Chris Smith, presenter of ‘5 Live Science’ on BBC Radio 5 Live and host of the Naked Scientists Podcast, will deliver a whistle-stop tour of the world of scientific and medical media at a free public lecture next week.
Chris is a medical consultant specialising in clinical microbiology and virology at the University of Cambridge and its teaching hospital, Addenbrooke’s. His ‘Stripping Down Science’ lecture will see him describe how the Naked Scientists, which is now one of the most downloaded science shows, came into being, with a nod to neuroscience and the formula the team use to make science meaningful for everyone.
The event is this year’s Sutcliffe Kerr Lecture, an annual neuroscience event hosted by The Walton Centre and the University of Liverpool. The event commemorates Alan Sutcliffe Kerr, a leading neurosurgeon who played a major role in founding the Walton Centre as a separate, specialist NHS Trust for neuroscience.
The lecture is being introduced by Professor Tom Solomon, Consultant Neurologist from The Walton Centre and Head of the University’s Institute of Infection and Global Health, who explains: “The Sutcliffe Kerr Lecture is the Walton Centre’s showcase public lecture. It is a great opportunity for the public to come and learn more about science, as well as hear more about the fantastic work that the centre is doing.
“This year we have BBC Radio’s The Naked Scientist Dr Chris Smith who is incredibly talented at explaining complex science in the most accessible terms.”
The event takes place in The Walton Centre’s Sid Watkins Building on Wednesday, 18 November at 5.30pm. Admission is free but places must be booked in advance by emailing Medical_Education@thewaltoncentre.nhs.uk.
