The Vice-President of Yahoo! Research Europe, Professor Ricardo Baeza-Yates discussed major algorithmic challenges during a talk at University of Liverpool’s Department of Computer Science.

Professor Baeza-Yates, who manages Yahoo!’s Flickr research team, was a guest of Network Sciences and Technologies (NeST), a new research initiative in the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science.

Event organiser, Paul Spirakis said: “It was a pleasure to host Professor Baeza-Yates. His talk focused on the major algorithmic challenges being handled by search engines coping with vast indexed data, as well as a huge volume of not so well-defined queries.

“Professor Baeza-Yates’ more personal research interests include web search and data mining, with the focus on distributed web search, query log mining, and web user engagement. These research topics and activities interplay finely with the main research and development goals of NeST.”

NeST research leader Paul Spirakis and Head of the Department of Computer Science, Professor Leszek A Gasieniec are seeking a long term partnership with Yahoo! focused on joint research explorations, grant applications, and other activities.
