Top award for Liverpool epilepsy expert

Professor Gus Baker

A Liverpool expert on epilepsy has won a prestigious national award.

Professor Gus Baker, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist at the Walton Centre and at the University of Liverpool, has won the Barbara Wilson Award.

The accolade is for an outstanding contribution to neuropsychology in the UK and is the profession’s top award.

Professor Baker’s work at The Walton Centre involves treatment of patients with epilepsy, in outpatients and as part of a surgical team.

His clinical work is combined with research and he has published more than 200 papers on the impact of epilepsy, leading to changes in clinical practices internationally. Much of his academic work has involved collaboration with colleagues around the world and he has presented in more than 30 different countries.

Professor Baker said: “My academic research has been well grounded in the clinical work I undertake at The Walton Centre. I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to work in many different parts of the world and both my clinical work and my research have benefited by being undertaken together.

“The Barbara Wilson Award is a prestigious award because it is granted by my peers and is one of the highest accolades of my profession, so I am absolutely delighted.”

He has previously been awarded the British Psychological Society Lifetime Award for distinguished contribution to professional psychology in recognition of his services to epilepsy; and the International League Against Epilepsy Ambassador Award.
